2017 SBF CSA Week #8

Hi Locavores!  It was a productive, yet celebratory holiday week here at the farm.  We got the last planting of tomatillos, peppers, and tomatoes planted and the first planting of the fall cole crops in the ground.  However, we made sure to find time to celebrate our country’s birthday.  More and more summer crops are ripening weekly, with cantaloupe, okra, and blackberries just around the corner.  You’ll find the first round of freshly-cured garlic in your coolers this week.  Garlic is a crop that has a really long growing season.  We planted this garlic last October, cut the garlic scapes in May, and are enjoying the cured bulbs now in July.  Oh wait, how can I forget all of the weed pulling that took place in between all of those milestones.  I guess we often times try to forget those tasks that seem never ending.  So, before I forget, I’d better get back to pulling weeds.  Have a great week!

What you’ll find in this week’s cooler-

– jalapeño peppers

– kohlrabi

– heirloom tomatoes

– grape and/or cherry tomatoes

– new potatoes

– rainbow swiss chard

– summer squash

– garlic

RECIPES OF THE WEEK (Simply click on the highlighted text to get the recipe)

Here at the farm we haven’t been able to stop eating the open-faced tomato sandwiches from last week’s newsletter yet, but we plan to mix it up this week with these Baked Parmesan Heirloom Tomatoes.

Even those individuals that don’t have a palate for spicy food will enjoy a bacon-wrapped cheesy jalapeño or five.

Potatoes and kohlrabi are a great combo!
